Lauralton to move to SCC

Lauralton Hall announced on October 4, 2013 that the school has applied and been accepted for admission into the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) of the CIAC. The school is currently a member of the South-West Conference.

"The SCC is a better fit for us overall," noted Lauralton's Interim Athletic Director Judith Gallagher. "Not only are the other Milford high schools in the SCC, there are also more schools similar to us, such as Sacred Heart Academy and Mercy High School."

Last year, Lauralton Hall met Mercy High School in the CIAC State Finals Basketball tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena. Mercy won with a game-winning three-pointer for a 54-53 victory.

Recently, the school conducted an audit of its athletic program and surveyed students, coaches, administrators, parents and alumnae. The question of moving to the SCC was frequently mentioned, most often by the Lauralton coaches and parents.

"One of the issues we needed to consider was the travel distance to other schools in the conference," said Gallagher. "When we did the analysis, we found that travel to schools in the SCC is easier than our current situation."

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our student athletes," said Lauralton Hall President Antoinette Iadarola. "The SCC offers some excellent opportunities that will benefit our students such as their diversity program, their leadership program, and their programs in music and fine arts. It expands opportunities for us and with our mission and strategic direction."

The school fields 15 varsity and junior varsity teams, including basketball, swimming, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis, cross country and golf. Lauralton's varsity hockey team currently participates in the SCC.
