Seniors donate to Smilow Cancer Center

Members of the Class of 2014 participated in three dress down days--designated days when students donate to a charity and, in return, have the privilege of wearing casual clothes rather than the school uniform. The dress down days netted $1,000 that was donated to Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The class came together to support the family of a classmate whose mother recently lost her life to cancer and had been treated at Smilow. “This was our way of helping a classmate and doing what we could for her and her family during such a difficult time,” said Kaitlyn DeLallo, ’14.

“One of our Mercy core values is compassion and service,” stated class moderator and history teacher Courtney Dwyer. “From the moment students walk through our doors, they work on many different types of projects to give back to the community. These dress down days are just one small way the class was able to give back and do something to help their classmate.”

On March 12, Alison Marcinek, Senior Development Officer at Yale New Haven Hospital, visited Lauralton to accept the donation and thank the senior class. “It is wonderful that the students came together to raise money for something that meant a great deal to them. I was very glad to come and let them know that their efforts will make a difference for the patients at Smilow Cancer Hospital,” she stated.

Lauralton’s close proximity to Yale-New Haven Hospital gave the students the opportunity to help those in need who may live in their own neighborhoods. “I like that Smilow is so close to us that we felt we were making an immediate impact on our community,” stated Kaitlyn Dempster, ’14.

When the time comes for this class to leave Lauralton, we know that they will take the Mercy core values with them in all facets of their lives and give back to their communities,” stated Mrs. Dwyer. “They will take a lasting connection to Lauralton with them into the world.”
