Soldiers visit Lauralton to thank NHS

National Honor Society welcomed two members of the United States Military to Lauralton’s campus on March 6. Army Specialist (SPC) Jordan Belle and SPC Tom Cunningham, both of 344 Military Police (MP) Company stationed in Afghanistan stopped in to meet NHS members and thank them for surprise packages sent to the Middle East at Christmastime.

NHS organized a donation drive in December 2013 to collect items for soldiers overseas. Four large boxes containing snacks, magazines, socks, undershirts, visors, sunglasses, wrapped Christmas presents, and other items were sent overseas. Jordan Belle received the shipment on Christmas Eve and distributed the gifts to fellow soldiers around the base’s Christmas tree. The 344 MP Company was one of three units stationed in the Middle East that received donated Christmas items from Lauralton. The students wanted to make sure that the soldiers knew they were appreciated back home in the U.S. while spending the holidays so far from their families. Belle and Cunningham both talked about how much these items meant to the soldiers, stating, “the measure of how appreciated and needed the items were was evident by how quickly the boxes were emptied.”

SPC Belle and SPC Cunningham talked with NHS members, shared photos of where they were stationed and discussed their journey home from Afghanistan. Both soldiers are from Stratford, Connecticut and are home after completing their tours. Cunningham will finish his duty in the next month, while Belle will remain stateside assigned to another unit.

“The girls at Lauralton are so generous to various groups and find it rewarding to meet some of the people they help along the way,” said club moderator Theresa Napolitano. “I wanted the students to be able to match a face with those they helped and realize the impact of their generosity.”
